I stumbled onto this place. Great excuse to put off doing what I should. :-)
I lived in Glasgow for a while and was briefly engaged to a bad-tempered wee baldy weegie engineer. I loved Glasgow and didn't want to leave. Almost missed the plane back to New York. Wonderful city. Wonderful people. Love Scotland. Miss it terribly. I hope to return someday.
Will I be clobbered by cabers if I mention that I'm originally a Londoner, and worse, from Kensington? <small Sassenach with a bad accent running away to hide, just in case>

Hello there, another new member. Good to have you aboard. Only one rule applies here.....new members get to make the coffees and teas for the first week! But we'll let you off if you've brought the malt with you.

Well hullo.... I thank you all for the warm welcome, Justin, Johnny, and Alisha.
I live out on Long Island in a very rural community in a wee house on the beach. It's not too far from Manhattan. I try to get into the city as often as I can. Manhattan's not Glasgow, but I do my best to adjust to the deficiencies. <laughing>
Shortly after I returned from Glasgow my mother's cousin, Margaret Cameron, took out this big book and showed me that we were really Scots. (I always wondered how it was that my grandfather... well.. another bizarre family story.) But wasn't that weird weegie engineer surprised to discover that I could hold my own in Gaelic. <wicked chuckle> But when one's accent sound's like the Princess of Wales with a toothache, one can hardly pass as a Scot. <snooty sniff> Living in the US is like falling through the rabbit hole. No point making things worse.
Justin, I'll make the coffee and tea, no prob. But I brought the malt. And I have some lovely bottles of stout here. I also have a smoked salmon and other fish. Tatties and neeps from my neighbour's field. Local asparagus. Fresh bread with a crisp crust and fresh butter. Raspberries and scones. Fresh cream. . . <listening intently> ... 'James!.... JAMES!!! James Andrew Stewart Fraser Spe... yes, you! I hear you. Get away from that fridge at once!' <grumble... damn kids!> 'The pizza and chicken's for you.... What? .......' <sound of muffled voices> 'Not another word.' . . My son is home from uni. No food is safe. This place is a zoo. It's after midnight and after spending the day on this wee 'puter I must go and chase the animals out of my kitchen.
TTFN.

Sounds like you're going to have a whole lot of great recipes to grace the pages of my website. NY must be good for you or you'd be back in Scotland with the real people, or here in Oz where the best of British judges sent we miscreant wayfarers.

Hi Justin and Koala,
No, I'm not a great cook. There's just always lots of good food available in the US. It's up to the cook not to ruin it. I have a neighbour who's a farmer and he sends over lots of lovely food. He's a clever old fellow. He knows I'll invite him for dinner because I know he doesn't like to cook. The supermarkets where I live have loads of fresh meats and produce. The lamb is horrid though.
Scotland to Oz. Far, far awa'.

Justin,
>> Modern technology....makes the world a wee small place! <<
That it does. I just love these 'puters. I travel with my wee laptop, devoted engineer that I am. I set up my VoIP link, and ring back to bully the kids over the Internet... for free. <laughing>
Hope to see Oz someday. I have a friend in Sydney. Never met him. Internet friend. We've been writing for years. I used to run a huge online tech community.

I have three kids and four grandkids in Sydney Julia, but I don't get down there now, too far away (about 500 miles). You must have been busy with the tech community!

Justin,
Kids are great. Too bad your grandchildren are so far away. You must miss them. I have three wee Scots that I mind, my friend and colleague Cameron's nephews. I love them to bits. They're all distant cousins. . . <listening> Duncan! I hear you... Get out of that fridge. And your brothers too. <sigh> . Like a swarm of locusts.
On Sports' Day, when the American kids at their school were dressed in red, white and blue, I painted blue Saltires on their faces. When the Americans cheered 'USA, USA' through the race, we bellowed 'SCOTLAND' as our boys were first across the finish line! The American parents were complaining because it was drizzling and the field was muddy. Cameron and I commented that it was perfect weather for Scots. For the Mother and Son Races, we went right through the puddles and won, covered with mud, blue paint, and glory. (Their own mother is dead so I am the stand-in.) Cameron and his three huge brothers, dressed in kilts, sang 'Scotland The Brave'. <laughing> Our neighbours think we're dafties. 'Nooo, oor Julia's no a Sassenach. She's a Scot wi' a speech impediment', he innocently told the mayor. His German housekeeper refused to let us into the house. She took out the garden hose and washed off the mud. <shiver>
Kids give grown ups an excuse to act immature.
The online community was great! 'My' sysops were really brill, and so were many members of the community. They helped the newbies who were just getting started with computers and worked through lots of problems. We did all levels of tech support, and there was a lot of tech chatter by people who knew what they were talking about. No slagging or nastiness. It was an easy way to learn about computers. Members came from all over the world. Those were the days.

Sounds a bit like the World Circle Julia. Its a community of independently owned forums who delight in visiting each others forums and encouraging our visitors and members to visit each others forums. It gives us all an unlimited variety if topics and styles of forums in which to participate. Help is always there, as there is always someone with the answer to any problem any member may encounter.

Justin,
It was the old Compuserve. My forum was closed a few months ago, but it was coming. CIS never was the same after AOL bought it. It was fun whilst it lasted.
I don't know the World Circle. I read in on the Experts Exchange, but I don't have the time run a forum anymore. I read in to keep my skills sharp. I'm still running W2k - I don't like XP. When Jamie's wee 'puter gets sent back from the uni repair shop, I'll have an XP 'puter in the house, at least for the summer. (All the 'puters on the uni LAN got a nasty worm and they're repairing them. Makes no sense since each 'puter runs its own anti-virus. You'd better believe that I'm gonna run my own anti-virus before I let that thing onto my own home LAN.)
